Types of Fourth of July Events in Northern Michigan

Here is what you typically find on the calendar around Fourth of July.

Fireworks Over the Water

Northern Michigan's waterfront setting makes its Fourth of July fireworks some of the best in the state. Traverse City's show over West Grand Traverse Bay is one of the largest in the region. Charlevoix lights up Lake Charlevoix, Petoskey fires from the bayfront, and smaller towns like Elk Rapids, Northport, and Torch Lake put on their own shows visible from the water.

Fourth of July Parades

Small-town parades with marching bands, fire trucks, floats, and community groups are a Fourth of July staple. Traverse City, Charlevoix, Boyne City, Petoskey, and Gaylord all hold parades, most of them in the morning before the heat sets in. These are genuinely fun and draw large local crowds.

Boat Parades

Decorated boat parades on Grand Traverse Bay, Lake Charlevoix, Torch Lake, and Elk Lake are a Northern Michigan tradition. Torch Lake's Fourth of July sandbar gathering and boat parade has become one of the most photographed events in Michigan. Spectators line the shore or anchor nearby to watch.

Concerts in the Park

Free outdoor concerts fill parks, town squares, and waterfront areas throughout the Fourth of July weekend. Lay Beach in Traverse City, Veterans Park in Charlevoix, and similar spots host live bands, often starting in the early evening and running through dusk ahead of fireworks.

Festivals & Street Events

Fourth of July weekend festivals with food vendors, games, craft booths, and family activities run in parks and on main streets across the region. Some towns combine these with their parade or fireworks. Elk Rapids, Bellaire, and Northport often feel like the whole town comes out at once.

Independence Day Runs

Morning 5K and 10K races are a pre-fireworks tradition in several communities. The Charlevoix Venetian Festival run, races in Traverse City, and fun runs in smaller towns are popular with runners who want to earn their afternoon. Most start early to beat the heat and finish well before parade time.
