The Summer Music Calendar You Need
Northern Michigan's summer music scene is more diverse and ambitious than most people expect. In the same week, you can watch a student orchestra at Interlochen, see a nationally touring country act at a winery amphitheater, catch a jazz quartet at a restaurant on Little Traverse Bay, and stumble into a free bluegrass jam at a small-town farmers market. The challenge is knowing where to look.
Interlochen Center for the Arts
The summer concert series at Interlochen is the regional anchor — world-renowned faculty, exceptional student ensembles, and visiting artists who choose Interlochen because the community takes music seriously. The June through August schedule includes symphonic, jazz, folk, and contemporary programs nearly every night. The Kresge Auditorium seats 4,000 for major events; the smaller venues seat a few hundred for chamber and jazz performances. Most are moderately priced; many are free. This is one of the best music values in the Midwest.
Friday Night Live — Traverse City
The Friday Night Live series on Front Street in Traverse City is the accessible entry point — free, outdoor, family-friendly, and running from June through August. Local and regional bands cover the full spectrum of popular music styles. The street closes to traffic and becomes a promenade of food trucks, families, and the kind of easy summer socializing that defines Northern Michigan at its best.
Petoskey's Top of Michigan Music Scene
Petoskey's summer music scene concentrates around the Petoskey Brewing taproom, the outdoor stages at the City Park, and the seasonal programming at Bay View Association — a Victorian-era camp meeting ground that has been hosting lectures, concerts, and community programs since 1875. The Bay View summer schedule is a genuine cultural institution with classical and folk programming in a beautiful lakeside setting.
Frankfort's Crystal Lake Music Festival
The area around Frankfort and Crystal Lake hosts an informal summer music festival scene centered on the Stormcloud Brewing taproom and outdoor events at the Crystal Lake Beach. The Benzie County arts community organizes chamber music performances in unexpected venues — barns, orchards, lakefront porches — that create the most intimate concert experiences in the region.
Cadillac's Mitchell Street Events
Cadillac's summer music calendar includes the Mitchell Street outdoor concert series, which runs Friday evenings through the summer season with a mix of local rock, country, and blues acts. The combination of the Cadillac Lake waterfront and the walkable downtown makes this a pleasant warm-weather evening destination.
Planning Your Music Summer
The Traverse City events calendar aggregates regional concert listings through the summer. Sign up for the Interlochen newsletter in January — the summer schedule typically posts in February and the most popular events sell out within days. For winery concerts, the Leelanau and Old Mission Peninsula wineries post their summer schedules in May; many fill quickly for nationally recognized touring acts. Keep the music events page bookmarked and check it weekly through June.
