Why Charlevoix Belongs on Your Summer Itinerary
Charlevoix sits on a narrow strip of land between Lake Michigan and Round Lake, connected to Lake Charlevoix by a channel that opens on demand to let sailboats through. It is a genuinely unusual geography — you can stand on the bridge and watch the lake, the channel, and the harbor simultaneously. Add to that Victorian architecture, a thriving marina culture, and an events calendar that runs from May through October, and you have one of the most satisfying small cities in the Midwest.
The mushroom-shaped houses scattered around the south side of town — built by the eccentric Earl Young between the 1930s and 1950s — are reason enough to visit. But the real draw is the community's relationship with summer: Charlevoix does the season with an earnestness that feels genuine rather than performed.
Venetian Festival
The Venetian Festival takes place over three days in late July and is Charlevoix's signature summer celebration. The festival centers on the waterfront park along Round Lake, with a boat parade at night that illuminates the harbor, fireworks over the lake, live music stages, food vendors, and art displays. The boat parade — private vessels decorated with lights gliding through the channel — is the kind of spectacle you think you can skip and then regret missing. Arrive by early afternoon on parade day to claim waterfront space.
Art in the Park
Charlevoix's art fair draws exhibitors from across the Midwest and Canada to the waterfront park for a weekend in late July. The juried show has a strong fine craft component — ceramics, wood turning, hand-forged metalwork — alongside paintings, photography, and sculpture. Sailing and Regatta Season
Charlevoix is a serious sailing town. The Charlevoix Yacht Club runs weekly races throughout the summer, and the annual Port Huron to Mackinac race — one of the oldest freshwater sailing races in the world — passes through the Straits in mid-July, bringing hundreds of racing yachts and a festival atmosphere to the waterfront. Even if you know nothing about sailing, watching 100+ boats under full sail in Lake Charlevoix on a summer morning is spectacular.
Farmers Market and Local Food
The Charlevoix Farmers Market runs Saturday mornings through the summer at the Bridge Street location. Local cherry growers, vegetable farmers, honey producers, and artisan food makers fill the stalls. Grab breakfast pastries from the market and walk the harbor — this is peak Charlevoix.
Earl Young's Mushroom Houses
No visit to Charlevoix is complete without the mushroom house tour. Earl Young was a self-taught builder who created 30+ whimsical stone cottages with organic, undulating rooflines that give them their toadstool appearance. They are all private residences scattered through the south side neighborhoods — a self-guided walking tour map is available at the chamber of commerce. The houses are strange and wonderful and unlike anything else in American architecture.
Day Trips from Charlevoix
Charlevoix is the ferry departure point for Beaver Island — a Lake Michigan island 32 miles offshore with 650 year-round residents, no traffic lights, and a fascinating Irish-American history (the island was briefly ruled by a self-proclaimed king in the 1850s). The ferry runs twice daily in summer; the island offers kayaking, cycling, and a genuinely remote experience within day-trip distance.
